At its event in San Francisco today, Google debuted its two newest flagship phones - the Pixel and the Pixel XL. Google launched the Pixel in both a standard as well as a jumbo size, the Pixel XL. But the 5-inch Pixel and 5.5-inch Pixel XL aren't noteworthy because of their hardware, but because of the software and services attached to them: not only will users be able to launch the interactive Google Assistant from their home buttons, but the phones will come with an unlimited amount of cloud storage for photos and videos at original quality —even 4K!—compliments of Google. Globally the Pixel is priced at $649 while the Pixel XL is priced at $749, which means in India you can expect the Pixel XL to have a price of around Rs 65,000.
The Pixel has a 2,770mAh battery, while the Pixel XL has a bigger 3,450mAh battery. Google are holding a press event tomorrow where they will make the new Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones official, we are also expecting to see some other devices at the event. Google has put its AI-fuelled features at the forefront of the handsets, and the Pixel and Pixel XL are the first smartphones to come with Google's Siri-rivalling Assistant.
Additionally, the Pixel and Pixel XL camera will also use a feature called HDR+ by default. Google said that the both the Pixel and the Pixel XL will include a 12.3-megapixel rear camera as well as an 8-megapixel front-facing selfie camera. Google has pre-installed Android 7.1 Nougat on the Pixel XL. This is the first time an Android version is available that does not exist on any other smartphone.
Pixel and Pixel XL are available in three colours, however, only two will be available to pre-order today. The Pixel and Pixel XL will be available in Quite Black, Very Silver and Really Blue colour options. Coming to the hardware, the Google Pixel and Pixel XL feature Snapdragon 821 chipsets with 4GB of RAM on board.
At $649 for the Pixel and $769 for the Pixel XL, Google is charging a lot more for the Pixel than it has for the Nexus devices. The Pixel and Pixel XL will also be the first smartphones compatible with the Google's new virtual reality headset called Daydream View, and a controller. It's also worth mentioning that the Pixel and Pixel XL offer an exclusive launcher, dubbed the Pixel launcher.
A Daydream View VR headset is available for the Pixel XL (an additional $79), legitimizing the high resolution: virtual reality is one of the most significant functions of the Pixel XL. Google is keeping the Google Assistant exclusive to the Pixel phones, at least for now. Text: Google today unveiled a phone which is made by Google inside out, Pixel.
Pixel will be £599 (32GB) and £699 (128GB) and Pixel XL at £719 (32 GB) and £819 (128GB) via Google Play. The Pixel and Pixel XL will be available from 20 October, with pre-orders starting in the UK, US, Australia, Canada and Germany on the Google Store from 4 October.
