Dell's 13-inch XPS 2-in-1 is all screen and the battery lasted longer

Dell has revealed a 2-in-1 version of its XPS 13 laptop , which looks to challenge Microsoft's Surface Book and other laptop-tablet hybrids. The first is a new version of the company's excellent XPS 13 notebook, while the second is a direct competitor of Microsoft's Surface Pro 4 Both double as tablets. The XPS 13 2-in-1 combines portability, comfort and plenty of power in a sleek, fanless design, but we wish the battery lasted longer.

Underneath the hood, the XPS 13 sports either a 3.2GHz Intel Core i5 processor or a speedier 3.6GHz Core i7 processors; both chip feature Intel's 7th generation Kaby Lake architecture that offers improved power-consumption over the previous Skylake generation. You do get fewer ports than on the regular XPS 13, and the battery life could be longer, but overall, the XPS 13 2-in-1 is a remarkable hybrid.

This XPS 13 2-in-1 is slimmer than the standard XPS 13 thanks to its new fanless design. To make use of the system's 2-in-1 design, Dell will sell an optional Dell Active Pen stylus so you can write directly on the laptop's display. Thanks to its hinged design, the XPS 13 2-in-1 supports multiple modes, including laptop, tablet, tent and stand.

Despite Dell claiming the XPS 13 is the smallest 13in 2-in-1 device on the planet", being 40 percent thinner and 20 percent lighter than the Surface Book , the PC maker has managed to cram in a 46Whr battery pack that it claims will keep the XPS 13 ticking along for 15 hours.

That's the exact same reason I, and many other reviewers, criticized Apple's new MacBook Pros But unlike Apple ( AAPL ), Dell has included a USB C to standard USB adapter with the XPS 13 2-in1, so you'll still be able to use at least one standard USB device without having to shell out cash for an adapter.

If the XPS 13 2-in-1 can manage to be as good as the standard XPS 13, Dell might just have two of the best Windows PCs on its hands. Dell's new Latitude 5285 is set to take on Microsoft's Surface Pro 4. In addition to the XPS 13 2-in-1, Dell is showing off a new laptop/tablet hybrid aimed squarely at taking on Microsoft's excellent Surface Pro 4. See, unlike the Surface, which lets you pull out the kickstand from the back of the tablet, the Latitude actually pops it out for you when you push the tablet down on a hard surface.

If you want to take full advantage of the inking features in Windows 10 and the ability to sketch and draw, you can buy Dell's $49 Active Pen PN556W and use it with the XPS 13 2-in-1. I'm not a fan of entering passwords to log in to my system, so I'm glad that Dell added a fingerprint reader to the XPS 13 2-in-1. Dell packed a 46-watt-hour battery inside the XPS 13 2-in-1, which is significantly smaller than the 60-watt-hour battery in the regular (and thicker) XPS 13. The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 starts at $999 for a full-HD touch screen, Core i5-7Y54 processor, 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD. After my everyday use with the XPS 13 2-in-1, I can say with confidence that it's a very capable 2-in-1 that I could see myself using daily.
