The Moto Z2 Play is the successor to last year's Moto Z Play
It supports existing and upcoming Moto Mods

The Moto Z ( Review ) ticked all the boxes for a flagship device, while the Moto Z Play ( Review ) was much more affordable. Along with these phones, Motorola launched a series of Moto Mods that helped enhance their potential. Now, with the Moto Z2 Play, it looks like buyers have new option to choose from.

Moto Z2 Play design

While the Moto Z was praised for its sleek body, the Moto Z Play was more bulky. Thankfully, the Moto Z2 Play is thinner, at just 5.99mm. The Moto Z2 Play is available in two colour options, Lunar Grey and Fine Gold. With the height and width of this phone unchanged, Moto has stuck with a 5.5-inch Super Amoled display. The frame of the Moto Z2 Play is metal and so are the power and volume buttons.

Moto Mods

The upside is that the new Moto Z2 Play is compatible with all Moto Mods launched to date. Moto Z2 Play specifications and software

Moto managed to strike a great balance between hardware and software with the Moto Z Play, which resulted in phenomenal battery life. The Moto Z2 Play is a dual-SIM smartphone with support for 4G and VoLTE. The 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display on the Moto Z2 Play sports a full-HD resolution. Like other recent Motorola phones, the Z2 Play ships with near-stock Android and the Pixel launcher. The Z series finally now gets the same fingerprint gestures that Moto launched with the Moto G5 ( Review ) and Moto G5 Plus ( Review ).

Moto Z2 Play performance

Stock Android and the Snapdragon 626 SoC give the Moto Z2 Play a boost in terms of performance. The battery still drained rather quickly while playing. In our HD video loop test, the Moto Z2 Play managed to run for 14h hours and 1 minute which is good, but is also three hours less than the Moto Z Play.

Moto Z2 Play camera performance

The Moto Z2 Play sports a 12-megapixel rear camera with dual-pixel autofocus, phase detection autofocus, laser autofocus and a dual-tone LED flash. The Moto Z2 Play has an auto night mode which is triggered in low light. At the front, the Z2 Play sports a 5-megapixel selfie camera along with a dual-tone LED flash. Moto Z2 Play review: Great battery life, pure Android makes it one of the best Moto phones
8.5/10
Underneath the camera lens is the iconic Motorola logo, under which are the contact points for the Moto Mods which are a controversial element of the smartphone's design.
Moto has also added a few nifty features under the Moto Display moniker. Except for a few first-party Moto branded applications, Motorola has left Android almost untouched.

Just incredible battery life

Compared to the Moto Z Play, almost every aspect of the Moto Z2 Play has seen an upgrade. However, the battery of the Moto Z2 Play has seen a substantial 15 per cent decrease - from 3,510mAh in the Z Play to 3,000mAh in the Z2 Play. This means that, on paper at-least, the Moto Z2 Play's battery life should be disappointing.

The battery life of the Moto Z2 Play is absolutely incredible - one of the best I have seen on an Android smartphones - bested only by its predecessor, the Moto Z Play. Good, if not spectacular cameras
The Moto Z2 Play's optics have seen a major improvement as compared to its predecessor. Where the rear camera struggles is in low light situations. The Moto Z2 Play is an extremely solid smartphone from Motorola and does almost everything right. Welcome back, Motorola.

Moto Z2 Play is powered by an Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 processor clocked at 2.2 GHz, with Adreno 506 GPU. I didn't experience major heating issues while playing graphics heavy games like Asphalt-8 on it, or while watching videos, which is great given Moto Z2 Play is a premium smartphone. There are no capacitive keys in Moto Z2 Play, something I'm not fond of. The 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage in Moto Z2 Play should be good enough to please an average user. "Motorola Moto Z2 Play Review With Video: With Moto Mods, It's the Real Flagship Killer

Don't compare the Moto Z2 Play with OnePlus 5-like smartphones to downplay the Moto Z2 Play in the spec-sheet race. Moto Z phones along with Moto Mods were a welcome break from the regular spec sheet race last year. While the ‘modular' Moto Z series phones are competitively priced, Moto Mods are expensive. While the older Moto Z Play smartphone is still selling for Rs 24,999, the second generation, Moto Z2 Play, offers a better design and upgraded hardware for the price of Rs 27,999. Both the Moto Z Play phones essentially focus on the overall ""modular"" experience in a budget rather than just a mere spec-sheet comparisons. So, what can a first-time Moto Mod user expect and should Moto Z Play users upgrade to the latest edition? WATCH VIDEO: Moto Z2 Play review

Don't compare the Moto Z2 Play with OnePlus 5-like smartphones to downplay the Moto Z2 Play in the spec-sheet race. Note that all Moto Mods are compatible with Moto Z series smartphones only.

The new Moto Z2 Play is slightly lighter and slimmer. While the first Moto Z Play offered a glass rear, this one is completely metal. The camera bump will always remind you to buy a Moto Mod. The Moto Z2 play also offers similar software tweaks to enable gestures and voice commands. The company has included useful software tweaks along with Moto Mod support on stock Android 7.1.1 itself. The smartphone offers a 12-megapixel f/1.7 PDAF camera at the back along with a 5-megapixel front camera. If you are bold enough to replace the thought of buying a high-end Android flagship with the Moto Z2 Play-Moto Mod combo then be assured, it will not disappoint. There is no Bluetooth support or cable connection to make Moto Mods work with other smartphones.
The only competitors of the Moto Z2 Play are the other Moto Z series smartphones. In terms of overall experience, it is hard to differentiate between the older Moto Z Play and the new Moto Z2 Play. There is very little on offer for older Moto Z series phone users to upgrade to the Moto Z2 Play.

Finally, there's a Moto GamePad that will launch this summer. You're betting on Motorola's Mods if you pick up a Moto Z2 Play, since they're what make phone much more fun to use.

The Moto Z2 Play is worth considering if you're buying a smartphone in the sub-30k price range. Moto Z2 Play: Detailed Review

Regardless of how a Moto Z2 Play stacks up in reviews, the phone is amongst the most trustworthy and innovative smartphones in recent times. The Moto Z2 Play is mostly an incremental update over last year's hardware, with a major upgrade in the overall camera performance.

Build and Design

The fingerprint sensor is below the display, with an oval design this time, instead of square as it was on the Moto Z Play ( review ).

Display

My favourite aspect of the Moto Z2 Play is its display.

Performance

Much like any upgrade” today, the Moto Z2 Play is an incremental update over its predecessor. Camera
With the exception of the dual-tone front flash, both cameras on the Moto Z2 Play are identical to the Moto G5 Plus. That means this phone gets the excellent dual-pixel camera from the company's cheaper device. Reviewing phones like the Moto Z2 Play reveals an interesting insight, that there are no truly exceedingly good cameras in this price segment.

The camera is identical to the Moto G5 Plus, with little to set them apart. The Moto Z2 Play's camera is not without its faults, but it's still one of the best cameras in the sub-30k price segment.

Battery

Spec-to-spec, the Moto Z2 Play is not a better smartphone than the OnePlus 3T ( review ). Snapdragon 626 Fingerprint Sensor 5.0MP + 12.0MP Cameras
